Notification from: Gilford Elementary School

Dear GES Families:

We were able to collect a large amount of non-perishable food items for Gilford Got Lunch through our Holiday Attire Food Drive. Thank you to all the families that contributed this past week. What a wonderful demonstration of generosity.

This year one of our school goals is writing. During our early release days we have focused our professional development on the Writers Workshop.  During Writing Workshop, your child is becoming an Author and Illustrator of many different types of writing.  Our goal is to teach your child to LOVE to write.  When you see pieces of writing, please allow your child to share them with you.  They will be very excited to share the things they are learning.  Please do not have your child fix all of the misspelled words or errors.  We do that work in school but we work on a couple of things at time.  Pick one or two things to praise them about.  I don’t want your child to feel discouraged because they have to fix all of their errors. Learning to write is a difficult process and we will do our best to make it fun.  We will be having small “celebrations” throughout the year to help keep them motivated!

Report cards were in backpacks on Friday.  If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher. Each standard that is assigned a proficiency level on the standards-based report card is broken down into the components that a teacher considers when instructing, assessing and assigning a proficiency level to your child’s performance. Our teachers have been working with Units of Study-Writing by Lucy Calkins which is new this year.  We are using assessment rubrics aligned with this program for the report card.  If you are noticing that your child is marked as beginning on the report card it it may be because the grade level expectations listed are for the end of the year.

The Gilford PTA is sponsoring a World Language Program for Gilford students in grades 1 through 7.  There is no charge for the program.  Space is limited, so students will be admitted into the program on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Students will be grouped as follows: Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4, and Grades 5-6-7.  The two elementary sections will be offered at the Gilford Elementary School and the middle school-aged students will have their sessions at the Gilford Middle School.  There will be two 10 week sessions offered: January 8-March 23 for Spanish and March 26-June 8 for French. Deadline is Tuesday, December 19. (see flyer for details)

We will have our annual holiday buffet for lunch on December 20th. Children will eat in their classrooms. This day many area firefighters, police officers and SAU employees will come to serve the children their holiday buffet. Also, we have our Pajama Spirit Day and sing along coming up this Friday! I hope you have a wonderful vacation with family and friends.
