Dear GES Families:

I hope you enjoyed the April vacation and spent some quality time with family and friends. There are a number of important reminders and upcoming events I wanted to make you aware of in May.

We were selected by the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Awards Committee (“EDies”) for a site visit on April 19th. The team was comprised of 5 educators who spent three hours visiting our school. The committee took a tour, spoke with learners about their work and checked out work samples, corresponding rubrics and their assignments.  They also observed most classrooms and spoke to our team facilitators. We will hear later this month if we will be named as the New Hampshire Elementary School of the Year for 2018.

As a reminder, current kindergarteners  will not be in school on April 30th and May 1st as we will be conducting screenings for next year’s kindergarten class.

On May 1st we will tie ribbons to the tree out front with our wishes. This event comes from a whole school read aloud book, Wishtree by Katherine Applegate.  We will also plant maple saplings thanks to a donation by Belknap Landscape Co.

On May 4th Officer Dan and I will speak with each grade level about the importance of safety drills.  We will stress the importance of stop, look and listen to a trusted adult to ensure everyone’s safety.

Staff Appreciation Week is May 7th- May 11th. This year our theme will be a Superheroes! The volunteer steering committee and the PTA have many wonderful events planned to thank our staff. We are also asking every learner to describe why their teachers are SUPERHEROES. You will receive the flyers in backpacks on Monday, April 30th.  Please have your child return them to their teachers on Monday, May 7th.

On May 16th the fourth graders will present their spring chorus production during school and again at 7:00PM for the evening show.

Our third and fourth graders will be participating in the New Hampshire Statewide Assessment System (NH SAS) in Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy between the dates of May 15, 2018 and May 24, 2018. The New Hampshire State assessments are an important part of a learner’s core educational program.

We will have a spring book fair from May 17th- May 25th.  We will once again have a family cookout on May 22nd from 4:00-5:30PM. We will be serving up free hot dogs, chips and water.

On Tuesday, May 22nd from 5:30-7:00, the Gilford school community will come together at Gilford Elementary School to celebrate the School District’s partners and to showcase student work made possible by a community that cares about kids. The participants will have the opportunity to visit learner exhibits and hear more about the Gilford Educational Endowment Foundation and their support in providing valuable resources to the Gilford School District. This exciting, free evening event will showcase elementary through high school student-generated work with the community.

Thanks to a generous donation our entire school will see an Extreme Science presentation on May 23rd. The presentation will demonstrate various scientific concepts, including motion, energy, inertia, balance, fire, electricity and others, by conducting experiments. Among the highlights of the program, Hagerman turns a bicycle wheel into a gyroscope, creates a human sling shot from a bungee cord, turns a piece of cloth into fire-resistant material and changes solids into liquids. Hagerman also emphasizes the benefits of respect, responsibility and safety in all facets of life and draws clear comparisons between science and magic.

I am sure your family’s schedule is starting to get busy with events.  Here is a list of important dates to add to your family’s calendar.

See everyone on Monday!

Danielle Bolduc, GES Principal
